ABSTRACT

As industry contributes around 70 per cent of China’'s energy consumption, improving industrial energy efficiency has been a priority in China’'s energy policymaking. Since 1990, China has made significant progress in improving the energy efficiency of its industrial sector, thanks to the variety of policies and programmes implemented. These policies and plans include regular tightening of energy intensity targets for key industrial products and large industrial energy consumers, subsidies to energy efficiency renovation and investment, to carbon emission trading. This chapter will provide a historical overview of the different policies and programmes introduced in different years and evaluate their overall effectiveness. The chapter concludes with some recommendations on the areas of improvement China’'s policymakers can consider for further and faster energy efficiency improvement for its industrial sector.
