ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the current energy efficiency policies and programmes in Kenya, in the context of the country’s prevailing economic and energy sector circumstances. Following its commitment to the objectives of Sustainable Energy for All and in energy sector development plans in recent years, Kenya has increasingly prioritised energy efficiency as a means of achieving a multi-faceted energy transition that improves energy security, increases energy access for improved livelihoods and reduces environmental impacts. The chapter points to some of the institutional and policy context for Kenya’s emphasis on energy efficiency; compares its current energy efficiency activities and status to other countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in similar economic circumstances; and examines programmes in the key end-use energy-using sectors of buildings and construction, households, industry, transportation and utilities. The analysis is then used to point to some of the immediate priority actions that authorities in Kenya may now take to better realise the potential benefits of energy efficiency.
