ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we analyse two reality shows: Sueño XL: La Transformación de tu Vida [XL Dream: The Transformation of your Life] and The Biggest Loser to show how the medical gaze and the associated techno-scientific discourses in these programs are raised as frames of reference and foundations of a set of beliefs. We have opted to compare one Chilean and one American reality show to describe how the ‘obese’ body is made a spectacle in mass media through social spaces across different countries. At the end of the chapter, we describe how some Latin American scholars and activists have started to challenge the spectacle of fatness in mass media from a critical approach to obesity.
