ABSTRACT

Critical readers have to do a little bit of work to trace the ongoing effects of obesity discourse in the Canadian context generally and in the provincial curricula in BC specifically. We do just this in this chapter, first by briefly overviewing the public health landscape both in the province of British Columbia as well as across Canada and follow this with a more detailed analysis of BC PHE curricula, carefully tracing the shape-shifting ways in which obesity discourse continues to be a force in influencing public health, even in its apparent absence. We conclude the chapter by arguing that if critical obesity studies are to continue to maintain their critical edge and relevance, the field must refrain from broad proclamations and do the nuanced work of tracing the shifting landscapes across which obesity discourse is taken up and materialized across multiple sectors.
