ABSTRACT

In live classical music events, digital technologies have been primarily employed in social media, digital marketing and online ticket sales, but they have scarcely been used in connection with visual and aural experiences in relation to live performances. This chapter discusses the findings in relation to the aspects of digital technologies and understands whether limitations might help future experimentation with digital technologies; to identify how digital technology applications in other genres could inspire orchestras; to interpret the benefits of integrating digital technology for audiences. It investigates contemporary practices and includes an overview of how orchestras have experimented with electronic music, analysing in what way the two genres have been integrated and have been performed together in a concert hall. The chapter analyses mobile technology and shows how orchestras have focused on the development of interactive concert guides for mobile devices, allowing the audience to access information about the works being performed during the live performance.
