ABSTRACT

The composition Deeper Love was composed specifically for this research, as a creative vehicle to implement the findings that emerged out of a performance of The Singularity, a pilot study presented at the Innovation in Music conference in 2017. Hödl, Kayali and Fitzpatrick describe Interactive Musical Participation (IMP) as being "When a spectator can take part or at least make a contribution in a live concert through a technically driven system". Following on from York's "Transforming Musical Performance: The Audience as Performer", this chapter illustrates the integration of IMP into the author's artistic practice as a jazz musician. Exploration of both distributed creativity and collaborative emergence were applicable to Deeper Love. Using participatory action research as a tool creates an opportunity for the researcher to use a variety of methodologies and engage in research processes that afford collaborative knowledge production.
