ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a Background section, which looks at a historical context of composer-performer collaboration and new instrument research. It explains the role some of the tools used play in the analysis of data. It also mentions most recent research contributions in this area. The chapter also explains the data collection process and methods used to analyse and contextualise the research findings. It looks into particular examples of the analysed data. During the research, data was collected from audio and video recordings of the entire rehearsal process in the Kubiak/Szafranski collaboration and the interview with the composer. One can strongly hypothesise that structuring the rehearsal time as a constant back and forth of small musical interludes and conversation about the piece would be the most fertile ground for creative ideas to grow. Once the music playing interludes become longer but less frequent, the chance for feedback, experiment and demonstration diminishes.
