ABSTRACT

Beginning in January 1983 a modified CHEMLINE file was made available to the NLM user community at a substantially reduced cost. In order to retain a valuable chemical dictionary service at a more affordable price level, NLM negotiated with Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) to modify the CHEMLINE content in a manner that would allow reduced royalties. These negotiations were predicated on the belief that considerable cost savings to the users of the database and to the National Library of Medicine could be achieved without significant degradation of the utility of the service, according to NLM’s Specialized Information Service.
