ABSTRACT

The question “what is the future of the monograph in libraries?” is critically important to scientific and technical publishers such as Wiley, because libraries historically have provided a stable base of sales which made it possible to publish a professional title at a price within the reach of the individual reader. Factors such as shrinking acquisitions budgets, increasing numbers of new book titles, and competition from alternate forms of information delivery are forcing publishers to apply increasingly conservative standards to selecting new manuscripts and to consider whether the “monographic package” is the optimal choice for the title’s true audience.
