ABSTRACT

Recent legislation and social pressures produced changes in the Animal Welfare Act, including a provision that requires environments that promote the “psychological well-being” of captive nonhuman primates. This paper focuses on the difficulties of both defining the concept of “the psychological well-being” of primates and identifying relevant documentation. An extensive literature review, on-line search strategy, and a listing of legal references, handbooks, guidelines, and update bulletins from agencies and associations are included, as are leads to audiovisual materials.
