ABSTRACT

Planning competitions are used to harness the talents of several design teams at once in order to investigate possible solutions for a specific challenge, for example, for a site to be developed. These competitions are grounded in the tradition of architectural methods of knowledge production, which means that visual imagery and illustrations are the key mode for transmitting ideas and knowledge. The competition used in the MATKA case study was launched in April 2010. Its main objective was to investigate alternative planning solutions for a new resort community. The linear forms of representation in architectural design, such as technical drawings and blueprints, are considered objective forms of representation. The commensurability of the proposals is a challenge in competition assessment. Planning competitions are grounded in the tradition of architectural knowledge production, which means that the imagined future is represented with visual material.
