ABSTRACT

Technology change of today often occurs in fast pace environments with uncertainty and considerable risk, where it is but one form of disruption occurring in the modern business environment. This faster pace of change has been aided by increased business interconnectivity, associated with globalisation, the internet and social media. The rate of change is so high that some wonder if the pace is now beyond the human capability, where there is an increased resistance to change incidences. To enable organisations to operate in the faster dynamic new age, it is likely that innovation is required as the historical frameworks may no longer work or be efficient. Innovation in organisational structures, processes as well as alternate planning and decision-making processes may enable an organisation to adapt to this new environment.

To improve innovation the organisation may need to foster entrepreneurial skills as such skills have been shown to improve product creativity and innovation. Organisations will likely need to increase speed in the organisation by removing layers of overhead, structures and governance in order to adjust to the speed of technological change. Organisational staff may not avoid the necessary increases in creativity and innovation, as they may need to be trained and available to promote the adaptive new organisation. This chapter will explore the creativity and innovation likely to be required as businesses develop new processes, structures and controls to meet the ongoing technology changes ahead. New decision-making models may also be required for the increased risk and uncertainty associated with this emerging disruptive environment. Innovation and creativity and promptness may be required to work in this new age of faster pace, more risk and uncertainty that is characterised with less complete data and facts.
