ABSTRACT

Exxon Research and Engineering Company’s experience in providing a complete storage and retrieval system, manual and online, for a group of Exxon engineers is detailed. The two-phase project for providing direct end-user access to proprietary information involved a collection audit, a user survey, document collection microfilming and organization, database construction, and end-user training in the use of indexes and online interactive searching. Key factors for the success of this project were an information intermediary assigned to the engineering division, the availability of flexible information systems, and the direct involvement of engineers and engineering management.
