ABSTRACT

Having given individual accounts of researching minority cultures and communities, this chapter considers the implications for qualitative research in these spaces as well working with marginalized groups more broadly. Critical synthesis of the important role of the researcher and the researched identity, positionality and power relations as presented in each narrative, as well as some of the practical issues that arise following these awareness/insights within research encounters, is presented. A comparative discussion of the research methodologies and methods used in the narratives as well as how distinct encounters require researchers to exercise critical judgement, culturally specific wisdom, and employ minority-specific strategies to challenge barriers and resolve issues, is discussed.
