ABSTRACT

Cooperatives exist in a range of forms, and they play a vital role in facilitating a more circular approach. This role is particularly evident in the agri-food sector. Using a case study approach with six cooperatives in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, this study examined the key challenges faced and strategies being employed to overcome some of these challenges. All of the case study organisations employed the cooperative model as a way of not only delivering economic value but also social value for members and the community as a whole. The concept of a circular economy played a fundamental underlying role in the practices and services of all. However, there were also some key differences between the cooperatives, for example, in terms of the key challenges faced and the manner in which they sought to overcome these challenges that could be utilised by other similar cooperatives.
