ABSTRACT

Much like in the rest of the world, the circular economy is gaining attention in Africa. This chapter provides an overview of circular economy activities across three key sectors where opportunities are already being realised: plastics, agriculture, and electronics. Within each sector, best-in-class examples of the circular economy in practice are provided. Following this, the missing narratives of the circular economy in Africa are detailed: the role of the informal sector, the role of design, and untapped opportunities in building and water systems. The chapter ends with some remaining questions related to Africa’s circular economy transition, without which there will continue to be a lack of understanding of the continent’s existing circularity, how best to retain this, and how to support the realisation of a circular economy in Africa to reach the African Union’s 2063 vision.
