ABSTRACT

Intraregional trade in food products, which remains grossly unexploited in South Asia, can have substantial impacts on food availability and access. This chapter undertakes a detailed product-wise analysis employing the concept of Additional Market Access Frontier (AMAF) - matching high supply potential and high import demand within the region - to assess the potential for imports of important food items by South Asian countries from subregional trading partners, possibly at a cheaper price. The analysis reveals a wide range of food products with high intraregional trade potential and with high sensitivity for food and nutritional security. The chapter also offers a set of policy recommendations for effective liberalisation of trade in food products in the subregion.
