ABSTRACT

In a world where access to information can increasingly take place anytime and anywhere, learning environments that provide compelling here-and-now learning experiences are becoming ever more important. The role of the leader of the briefing process is to articulate and guide the process, focusing on value-for-money decision-making and opportunities for desired change. In defining initial user requirements, a framework is sought that will accommodate a range of typical group sizes and needs, to build in sufficient flexibility for change over time. While each project is different, general patterns around group sizes and basic requirements can be ascertained. The goal is to balance the desire of those who will be using the space to keep options open for as long as possible, alongside the concern of those providing the space to freeze requirements as early as possible in order to progress design and stabilise costs.
