ABSTRACT

The technical performance of a building – or group of buildings – involves more than just energy data, in the same way that sustainability is a more complex issue than LEED and BREEAM can capture. University estates and buildings must respond to changes in use, the effects of climate change and ever-tightening requirements to reduce the use of natural resources, and can reduce carbon impacts. In contrast with many other building types, universities are in an enviable position with regard to taking a long-term view. Universities, like cities, include many different building types. From student accommodation, arts venues and leisure centres through to teaching and research facilities, each has its own specific requirements and challenges. In traditional academic buildings, a demand-led strategy can ensure that low-occupancy spaces are only conditioned when occupied, and that equipment defaults to off or a setback condition.
