ABSTRACT

This chapter presents projects in the US designed by Ann Beha Architects of Boston, Massachusetts, reflecting an intersection of building heritage and sustainability. A high value was placed on heritage, with the inherent costs and challenges of adapting historic buildings for 21st-century academic needs recognized from the start. The general approach has been to preserve all building elements and features that contribute to the aesthetic and institutional heritage of the Main Group, to restore deteriorated historic elements, and to employ for all new construction a contemporary design aesthetic that is differentiated from the historic aesthetic. A contemporary building is paired with a revitalized 1892 building to create the Lerner Center for the Department of Music at the University of Pennsylvania. The University has established a policy that supports sustainability in its building construction and renovation projects, and utilizes the United States Green Building Leadership in Energy and Environment Design Certification System to guide sustainable renovation and construction on its campus.
