ABSTRACT

Creating sustainable change using Lean principles can prove challenging in any healthcare system. This chapter will help healthcare executives and their teams understand how to create lasting change using proven Lean methods. From creating a Lean Management System to getting buy-in from board members and staff, any Lean initiative requires time and attention. Real-world examples of Lean implementation are described including results that healthcare leaders have attained during years of methodically applying the principles to take their organisations to new heights. This is illustrated with a case study example featuring Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. The chapter closes with two Learning Activities designed to help readers to begin to understand how to see the work while creating a Lean Management System.
