ABSTRACT

The production preparation process (3P) is a participatory workshop-based approach to Lean design. 3P provides a structure for collaboration between service users, clinical and other service delivery and support staff, planners, construction staff and architects. It directly links product and process design. The 3P process decreases costs by reducing revisions to plans, while also delivering a better product as it is closely aligned with service delivery requirements. The chapter provides a detailed case example of the first application of 3P in the English National Health Service (NHS) for the design of an assessment and treatment unit for adults with learning disabilities. It takes the reader through the whole process from the initial requirements to the delivery and early use of a building.
