ABSTRACT

A ‘hack’ typically refers to any method or shortcut that increases productivity or efficiency. It is originally a computing term, but now used more generally in activist cultures to refer to novel developments in any area of human activity. ‘To hack’ something is to apply an unconventional innovation. This requires an openness to see the issue freshly and to challenge any traditional assumptions that cloud creativity. A profession of psychotherapy and societal organising, informed by embodied process, is the hack we need. Psychotherapy is meant to be, and must be, emancipatory for the client, otherwise it ceases to be ‘therapeutic’. Psychology and the ‘mental health’ industry have colluded with the marketing of certainty.
