ABSTRACT

Sarah Wigglesworth Architects is a London-based architecture practice, founded 20 years ago. The practice works on education, residential, culture and community, public realm and mixed use, as well as on research. The practice pioneered research through design and practice, starting with Stock Orchard St in 1996. This project, for the design of a new primary school, aimed to pioneer design research that included engagement with the community as a central feature of its briefing and design process. Its goal was to extend our designs for our Building Schools for the Future exemplar primary school by testing this brief in the context of the specific circumstances of this school community in Wakefield, Yorkshire. Their approach aimed to place user experience at the heart of the design process and address how the building could be low impact and low energy, establishing clearly which proposals worked and which did not.
