ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the some characteristics that are key to the successful implementation of building information Modelling (BIM). In particular, it is recommended that firms adopt a gradual tiered approach. An essential part of BIM-readiness is a consistent naming protocol for data storage elements such as folders, files and sub-file element groupings. This allows users to apply standardised criteria for sifting quickly through large amounts of multi-disciplinary data. Equally, it makes no sense for a construction supply chain team to make the bold transition to a server-based Integrated Building Model environment when its attempts to regularly coordinate independently generated models at BIM Level 2 have foundered badly. Support employee development with time for formal BIM training and staff mentoring. Given the initial lack of knowledge, design practices and construction firms are usually willing to pay for staff to attend fundamentals training on BIM software.
