ABSTRACT

In late 2016, a varied group of like-minded architectural practices from across England formed the Architecture Apprenticeships Trailblazer Group to address the challenges faced by young architects joining the industry, which had been brought into sharper focus by the recent apprenticeship levy imposed by the government. One of the key observations was how architectural practices could drive change in the industry much faster than academia and institutions. Schools of architecture are rolling out new courses that, through enhanced collaboration and integration with practices, will provide an enriched experience for students. As the scheme offers a pathway to gain the academic qualifications needed to become a registered architect that significantly reduces potential student debt, the Trailblazer recognises the important role apprenticeships could play in improving diversity and social inclusion within the profession.
