ABSTRACT

A student of architecture can expect to come away from university equipped with skills in creative design, time management, communication and leadership. The natural teamwork nature of architectural study also contributes to a strong basic knowledge in problem solving and interpersonal communication across a range of environments, including one-to-one tutorials, small ‘crits’ and formal presentations to larger groups. The natural integrator and coordinator role of the architect leads to an understanding of every aspect of the development process, from brief through to the handover and assessment of built assets, capturing knowledge that will continuously improve future designs. The transition from architect to project manager is a natural one, as the project manager guides the wider project team through the development cycle, while also working closer with developer clients to maximise development value. The construction industry is more diverse than ever and an architect’s core skills are already applicable across a wide variety of roles.
