ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores how technology is transforming architecture, and what this means for architects. Design theory goes through periods of change caused by wider developments in philosophical, aesthetic or scientific thinking, and architects are keen observers of the pattern of the transformations that these changes can bring. The development of computer-aided design technology, parametric design, advanced geometries and 3D printing have all had a major impact on the conception and production of designs and the construction methods used to build them. Environmental sustainability has influenced our thinking about the massing and materiality of most building projects and is regarded as an important aspect of architectural quality. Drawing systems are developing fast, from pen and ink to integrated networked 3D graphic solutions, new construction methods are devised, new materials are invented and novel ways of using traditional materials are emerging.
