ABSTRACT

Guidelines for recommended site areas in the urban schools are often unattainable and this is leading local authorities and other school operators to consider increasingly creative solutions for providing good and outstanding learning environments. Children with Special Educational Needs will also be educated in a range of settings depending on their needs and available provision. Special schools, some with residential accommodation, will cater for a variety of physical needs, emotional and behavioural conditions. Many phases of education are incredibly creative in how they use their environment, and this is especially true where space is restricted. School leaders need to bring this pragmatism to the table when they brief for new schools on restricted sites and work with the design team to develop the right buildings for their learning community. Younger students in Early Years Foundation Stage are normally located on the ground floor for convenience and safety.
