[First published, anonymously, in The Baviad, A Paraphrastic Imitation of the First Satire of Persius, London, R. Faulder, 1791. This edition of the poem is based on the text found in its eighth edition, in The Baviad, and Mæviad. By William Gifford, Esq., London. S. Tipper, 1810, pp. ix–51. Textual variants against the first edition (cited as 1791) are given as endnotes. Gifford’s preface was added in the 1796 publication of The Baviad and Mæviad, and the coda on the fate of ‘Antony Pasquin’ in the 1800 republication.
