ABSTRACT
In annotating texts we have relied heavily on contemporary documents in order to illuminate, as Peter Shillingsburg calls it, ‘the intellectual and emotional soup that went without saying for the author and original audiences and which they drew upon to generate meanings from the texts’ (From Gutenberg to Google (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2006), p. 23; emphasis added).
