ABSTRACT

Falconbridge was a surgeon who had been forced by poverty to practice his profession on board slave ships. While at Bristol, Falconbridge had married and his wife Anna Maria accompanied him on the voyages to Sierra Leone. Anna Maria Falconbridge remained in Sierra Leone after her husband’s death in 1793, undertaking passage on a slaving voyage and returning to Britain. Alexander Falconbridge’s Account gave a factual and gritty statement of the trade, covering the preparation made for the voyage, the procurement of the slaves from kidnapped Africans, the treatment of the slaves during the middle passage, the sales of the slaves, the conditions suffered by the sailors, and a short description of the kingdoms of Bonny and Calabar.
