This chapter presents excerpts of a telling vignette featuring Corncob’s observations of Caribbean slavery in the novel Jonathan Corncob. After portraying scenes of plantation cruelty and a disastrous hurricane (Barbados was badly hit by one in 1780), the Barbadian episode of the novel ends with the actuarial accounting of the hurricane-related damages incurred by the plantations.
