ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the hints and designs that are founded on the excellent and philanthropic plan of separation, reward and punishment of the benevolent Howard, embracing all his views, with some attempts at improvements on his admirable ideas. It is universally admitted, that few men knew more of the construction, economy and discipline of a prison, than Mr. Howard, who has given to his elaborate work thereon, a motto replete with philosophic profoundness, justice and truth. Security, Health and Order, are among the first requisites of a prison, and they have been most attentively considered in the accompanying designs. The elevations of these designs are not given, as they must depend in a great measure on the material with which the place abounds, where the prison is to be built. Prisoners should be allowed to work under proper regulations, and profits divided according to agreement, to be made by a committee and according to an act of parliament.
