ABSTRACT

The Manchester Magistrates, full of their own stupid conceit, and inflated with that power which nature never designed they should possess, have fleshed the swords of their young trained bands in the bodies of Britons, assembled to regain their lost rights—reformers had almost said privileges; but the People must give the privileges themselves, being the depositaries of their own power. In the new map of England, if it should be divided under a despotic sway into military district, Manchester ought be marked in red, and denominated the bloody district, of which that general who offered ten pounds for an evidence of tampering; with a soldier, entitled to the prime command. Had the military only attacked robust men, only wounded those who had offered them insult, only dot death and destruction with something like discrimination, much infamy would have been their lot.
