ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the theme of the book and establishes the conceptual, theoretical and practical context for the chapters that follow. It undertakes a general discussion of the specificities of the cities and urban public space of the Greater Bay Area and delineates the multi-scalar and multi-perspectival nature of this volume, as an approach requisite to interrogating the question of public space in such a megaregion. The chapter also presents a chapter-by-chapter synopsis of the book’s contents, interwoven with an explication of the structural and narrative logic of the book.
