ABSTRACT

Schools of architecture, urban design and planning in the United States increasingly offer their students the opportunity to participate in international studios. Developing an understanding of different places and cultures is essential for the education of the next generation of global designers, and urbanism studios offer invaluable lessons towards developing this knowledge. However, there is a surprisingly limited academic debate on the best pedagogical practices for such studios. This chapter explores the role of responsible, remote research and design of the public realm.
