ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses public space as a medium for the production of public realm in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) megaregion. In doing so, it brings together the dialectical framework discussed in Chapter 1 with the distinction between ‘the public space’ (an epitome driving the rhetoric of economic development and political homogenization) and ‘public spaces’ (lived urban places with differentiated yet negotiated layers of meaning and everyday practice). Accordingly, this chapter distinguishes between the megaregional public space and public spaces in the megaregion and discusses both through case studies and concrete examples.
