ABSTRACT

The digital age demands technologically accomplished and innovative lawyers who understand the opportunities and challenges faced by their firms and clients owing to the advances and transformations in technology. Empowering lawyers to thrive within this new ecosystem, means addressing the skills gap in England and Wales and requires a progressive multidisciplinary curriculum that integrates legal education with studies in technology that go far beyond the acquisition of digital literacy skills. This chapter explores the merits of such offerings and examines the masters programme in Legal Technology offered at the University of Law, focusing on the knowledge, understanding and critical insights needed into legal technology geared towards responsible and innovative thinking. It looks at how the learning and teaching methods facilitate fundamental knowledge exchange between the legal and tech industries thus bringing current and emerging matters to the fore to promote thought leadership. It considers how the versatility of the masters allows students to combine their modules to tailor the programme to students’ specialism and expertise, thus placing them in a prime position to be both responsive and/or lead on the transformations that shape the future of legal practice for the new breed of a lawyer in the digital age.
