ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a comprehensive and incisive examination of current practice in diversity, equity, and inclusion training with particular attention to anti-black racism education. Natalie Copper-Illingworth next writes of her experience in Yorkshire where as a team leader in Adult Services with the UK government, she designed and implemented her own program to embed critically reflective practice into her own team. She describes in helpful detail the practical, bureaucratic and learning challenges which she experienced and in the process, provides us with valuable ideas about how to negotiate many of these details. Michael Hughes’ chapter is in some ways similar to Natalie's in that he writes about his relatively new experience in providing critical reflection training in a London borough. He, like Jana and Dianne, uses critical reflection more as a means to an end.
