ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the process of implementing regular critically reflective practice groups in local authorities through a Learning Critical Reflection Series. It explores some of the different ways to embed critical reflection into everyday practice. The chapter includes a discussion of the details of the model used to implement critical reflection and discussions with the participants of the issues and challenges involved in trying to embed critical reflection more broadly. It outlines an approach to learning critical reflection and the outcomes for individuals learning in practice. Participants learned that by practicing the model they created ‘space’ in their workday where they could stop to think about practice and supervisory issues. They were able to reflect on stuck situations within casework creating new awareness and new meaning. It is important to acknowledge that giving social workers and social work managers the tools for developing critical reflective practice groups may not be enough.
