ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses Indonesia-Latin America relations focusing on the 21st century and proposes ways to take Indonesia-Latin America relations to a new higher stage. Indonesia has a cordial political relationship with most Latin American states. Jakarta should turn this good political relationship into a good economic one. Despite the fact that there are still lingering challenges to enhancing Indonesia-Latin America relations, both parties have common foreign policy interests in improving their economic relations. Strong political will, consistent commitment and proactive policies on both sides are crucial to strengthening bilateral relations. This chapter suggests that the Indonesian foreign policy agenda should give more space and attention to Latin America and argues that Jakarta may significantly enhance its position by appointing a special envoy to Latin America to signal its interest in the region more clearly and to coordinate Indonesian public and private efforts in the continent. Finally, and importantly, Indonesia and Latin America should work together to address their common infrastructure and connectivity challenges, a key issue to the flourishing of any trade and investment flow.
