ABSTRACT

This article identifies and discusses the primary issues associated with managing an access services department. Some of the issues presented include: (1) identification of functions reporting to access services, (2) organizational considerations, (3) role of access services manager including level of expertise and leadership/management characteristics and (4) managerial issues and recommended proficiencies. The article describes a general operational and informational framework for access services managers and recommends a research agenda for both short and long-term studies.
