ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to support students prior to attending work placements who may have little or no experience of working with children. Attending an early childhood setting for the first time can be a daunting experience for those with little understanding of early years practice, and it is important to prepare well and have some idea of what to expect. The chapter intends to support emerging practitioner by demystifying aspects of early years practice and by answering key questions surrounding early years practice and the role of the student/volunteer. It develops confidence in our ability to successfully negotiate this highly specialized and complex area of practice and be prepared to begin our journey as the emerging practitioner. The chapter considers what it means to be the emerging practitioner and identify ways to support the people in this role. It explores roles and responsibilities within settings and aspects of professional conduct, including communication, health and safety, risk and safeguarding.
