ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the organising strategies engaged by movements for gender and sexual diversity within the transnational context. Mainstream pursuits and achievements dominate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and Intersex (LGBTQI)-based information being shared. The goals and objectives of LGBTQI movements and the strategies for pursuing them can vary from group to group, often premised on differing political perspectives. The international agenda has followed the path of most Western LGBTQI movements, particularly those in Europe and North America, in that they have sought equality with mainstream heterosexual society, often through rights claims. Same-sex marriage is a prime example of a dominant agenda item driven by mainstream LGBTQI groups in the West that both went down the assimilationist path and spilled onto international initiatives. When it comes to the globalisation of divergent voices of gender and sexual diversity, the developments in the LGBTQI movements of the West have attained a prominent place in international discussions of gender and sexual diversity issues.
