ABSTRACT

The professional military education (PME) system in India continues to lag on account of its traditionalists’ and tactical orientation. Over the years, successive Indian governments have attempted to reform the PME structure through a set of institutional measures. These include expanding the breadth of academic programmes in staff college and universities as well as providing more fellowship opportunities to military officials in the universities. More importantly, the government has cleared the proposal for setting up the national defence university (NDU) to build a framework of multi-disciplinary education for national security leaders. The ongoing reforms, occurring albeit at a slow pace, mainly intended to bring a qualitative change in military education and, in turn, arrest the trend of military officers getting promoted to higher ranks without adequately going through rigorous education programmes.
