ABSTRACT

Migrating to the United States, adjusting to the new terrain and retaining their cultural heritage is a challenge for the Manipur’s American diaspora. Besides, they need to integrate with their host society. By interviewing individuals belonging to various ethnic communities, such as the Manipuris aka Meiteis, Tangkhul, Liangmai, Rongmei, Kuki, Hmar, Mayon and Anal tribes, and through personal observations, the socio-cultural and development ties with their homeland are highlighted in this study. Culture helps them to have a sense of belonging, understand their identities, communities and other racial groups, which slowly develops from one’s birth and is molded by norms, values, attitudes and traditions of their homeland as well as the host country.
