ABSTRACT

Using the personal experience of the author as the lens, this chapter will reflect on diasporic South Asian dance in continental Europe in two different ways: in terms of dancing out of place and out of time. The first part – dancing out of place – will be an auto-ethnographic and critical theoretical analysis of a displaced diasporic dance practice in Bavaria (Germany). Part II – dancing out of time – will focus on notions of time, memory, history and archive, in order to critically interrogate notions of ‘the contemporary’ in dance as well as gaps in Eurocentric dance historiography.
