ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the dynamics of diasporas, development, and displacements in Asia with specific reference to India. It begins with an overview of the concept of diaspora and examines the ways in which overseas communities remain connected to homelands through diverse transnational practices. It then looks at some of the complex issues and negative consequences – including economic vulnerabilities and political and ideological reshaping of homelands that may be caused by such connections. The chapter illustrates such complexities through two case studies. In the third section, it examines the historical reliance of the southern Indian state of Kerala on remittances for development. In the fourth section it analyzes the case of urbanization in the metropolis of Kolkata as being driven by diaspora-led or -targeted developments. The chapter concludes with some discussion of the future of diasporas, developments, and displacements in a pandemic world.
