ABSTRACT

Assessment and evaluation are important aspects of teaching and learning. In fact, high-quality assessment in the classroom has the potential to have a positive effect on student achievement. This chapter will explore formative and summative assessment practices that may be used to inform instruction and classroom climate as well as help identify students who may require specialized instruction within pre-kindergarten and elementary school settings. Readers will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct continuous progress monitoring of academic and behavioral skills with diverse learners and become familiar with components of special education eligibility evaluations. When assessing special populations of minority students, teachers and educators must consider the instructional needs and the assessment practices to obtain a more equitable outcome.
